Books Dilemma !!

I love, love reading books so i buy lots of them, yes they stay for long sometimes for their turn to be read ,but they are going to be read eventually and here is the dilemma :D,
what shall i do with them after that ? .

I don't keep  books, i used to but not anymore,  i rarely re-read a book again.
then, i used to send them to some of my cousins ,they say they like to read books but apparently they aren't, cuz the packs i sent a few years ago are still not finished or maybe "the take time to read a book" is a gene in the family. Now, they say they don't want any :(

Libraries here are for selling books, and the only place to sell them is by "bunch" of them only. And i don't care for selling books.

Public places only allow religious books and i can not find anyone to want them !!

So what do i do with them, right now i have almost 10 finished books but there are 108 are waiting , So...
I thought of giving them as gifts to people who visit my blog here , what do you think ? Is it a good idea ?

Please don't read and leave... give me your opinion, what shall i do with my already-read-books and the rest !!!

  1. I think giving them away is a good idea. I've done that with books through my blog. I just post a list, broken down my fiction, non fiction or whatever category and then let people claim them.

  2. Great post idea and post! You answered some of my curiosity about book availabity in Saudi--and pre-empted most of my suggestions.

I tend to keep the books I buy, but I have given duplicates (bought forgetting I already have a copy) to friends or family, or to the hospital library for patients to borrow for leisure reading.

There are programs for donating books to school libraries in developing countries.

I'm not sure about compound libraries or the libraries of international schools in Saudi, but based on my experiences in Morocco and Hong Kong those are 2 settings that come to mind as often more in need--especially of quality books--than one might think.

    Good food for thought!

  3. بائع كتب في كابول + الجريمة و العقاب 1 + 2

    شششششششششششششششكرا ً على الذكريات :)

if u r gonna give them away as gifts, why not consider some libraries too, the remote ones :)

  4. Wow, Wafa',what a pile! :-D I was thinking of expats who may enjoy some of those. Any chance you can donate or sell them to people like that? I keep some books, but like you, I rarely reread them so I would like to give them to people who will enjoy them.

I love seeing your books, by the way!

  5. I think giving them away to people, or donating them are all great ideas.

There are also sites for book swapping, where you list your books, then people "claim them" you send them to them, and in return you get "points" that you can use to get books from other people - that way you'll get more books to read too. I haven't tried any of them myself (as I rarely buy books, having amazing libraries here in DK). http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Comparison_of_Book_Swapping_Websites

There's also sites such as this one: http://www.bookcrossing.com/

Where you mark a book, then give it to someone, with the only rule that the person must give the book away too - and then through the tracking number you can track it across the globe.

  6. Giving away books is always a great idea. Books are treasures. However, you could also start your own library and if there are readers around you who would like to borrow they could do that as well.

I started that a few years ago and a lot of friends borrowed from my library. Now I have moved and have little space to keep them, but they are waiting in boxes for me, lol.

    Salam alaikum.

  7. i dont always buy books, I swap books with friends who actually read books too. we save each others the trouble of buying extra copies.. There are some libraries in jordan which buy used books. or you can donate the books to private schools or universities libraries.

But really, try this one, swap books instead of buying them, sometimes reading your friends notes on the side can be fun too

  10. Chiara,

happen to me with the duplicates, lol lots of them.

  11. Haitham,

    you are welcome :)

btw, is بائع الكتب في كابول a good one? i bought it but not that enthusiastic about it !!

  12. Becky,

I read about these sites but i don't think they work in Saudi Arabia, but will check the links anyway, maybe the places have changed.

Sadly, we have limited books in public libraries, and there aren't that many in a city, probably one or two, so sad :(

Thanks for the links and the idea my dear :)

  13. Salma,

the problem is that i don't like to just collect things as in having a library of my own. beside i am not a mother to give them away to my kids and yes space is always a problem.
