My Father :)

The idea that he is gone forever is not yet sunk in me. But even if he is, i don't want to talk about him or remembering him crying . Yes, i am going to miss him . But i want him to be alive within us .
If any topic came and we mentioned him, i don't want us to start crying. We will miss him forever, but i want to say his name and smile :) . I am already doing so. I choose a very beautiful picture of him smiling as a wallpaper in my phone . That's how i want to remember him.

I am going to miss him terribly. Me and him didn't have the relationship i wished for but i still know that he loves me and i will make him proud .

We have not talked to him in three weeks and three days- during his last illness-. But we all saw the good signs during and after his death and i want to believe in them, no matter what anyone might say.

He died in Friday-a significant day-, all the procedure to take his body from the hospital to the house went by so quickly.
His face with shining :) , his funeral was the fastest in four funerals with him.
And the best of all to me -at least-, that he was lied on my bed for about five hours until they take him to the mosque . Every thing about his death and burial was quick and people witness that. He was eager to go , and why would not he when is going to meet -inshAllah-his parents, his brother and sister and his three kids.

So why would i want to be sad for a man who was so eager to go to heaven inshAllah :) .

He was indeed resting in peace now inshAllah :)

During the darkest hours you learn great stuff like how people are nice in general and that good deeds are never lost.

But the most important thing is that nothing is the same for good. I can see it with my mother. How much she hated and fought with him when he was alive , but when he is gone. She is so sick and so sad and wanted him back.
I never ever in my whole life heard her saying " habibi" , but i did now.
She was never in love with him, but everything now makes her say it and feel it and it never make me sad, i am so happy that she loves him and respects him and forgives him even if it's after he is gone. I
t's never too late. And i am positive that he will know somehow, and that this is will make him happy :)

Yes, we will miss him. But i choose to smile remembering him, because that's the least he deserve :)

Poverty is a Shame.

A week ago, i was writing a post about poverty but then i decided against posting it, it was very harsh. But this topic needs people to be harsh.
Anyway, Manal's comment urged me to write again. Maybe someone will listen.

Unlike some other topics, this one can be very personal to me, cuz we were poor. Sometimes we couldn't find 10 Saudi riyal-3.75 dollars- in our house. My father worked once a month to bring 300 riyal-about 75 dollar- and do nothing the rest of it.
For a family of 6 children and their parents. It was nothing. We were saved more humiliation because we lived in our grandfather's building. But everyone was sure to make us understand that GIFT and how a huge burden we were.
I don't know what might happen if we have to pay for rent, too.
My mother used to borrow money from people and her sister. She never let us know how poor we were. When most of us grow up corrupted, everyone blames her for the way she raised us. People forget that when you poor, you only think of how to provide money for your kids.
Go on and read how poverty affect people and their morality. Poverty affects all kinds of people's lives.

When we were kids, i don't remember asking for something and didn't get it, i didn't know we were poor . But i do remember that she would go borrow money for me and my sister to buy the books and the clothes we need .

Now things are better. Tough but way better. Better because i work and have my own salary, tough because we are still 5 and i am the only breadwinner of the house. Life is getting tough and everything is becoming crazy expensive. Thanks to Allah i have my work to support us, but i remember once when my mother commented after watching people buying stuff for the Eid " what about those unemployed ladies, who will buy them any thing". I know that she remember her self and how tough is it.

I know that here in Saudi Arabia we have a society issue with poverty. We recognized it but we don't know how to handle it. Lots of social idea affect our ways of life that pull us towards poverty and we can not do a thing about them. But if we start having the courage to change them , maybe things will be different. Maybe not becoming the filthy rich but you won't be the poor one, too .

We are a consuming society. Artificial things drives us mad.
A city like my city -Medina- which is not that big has more than twenty shopping centers. And the funny thing is that you will find the same stores in all of these centers.

We go crazy with brands. I was one of them especially with shoes and bags, i have huge number of them with different colors and shapes. They cost me lots and lots of money. And if it was not for the problems we are facing right now, i don't think i would have stopped. If i didn't buy a new thing for about three months, i consider that is a very long time and a sacrifice on my part !!! . And i look at my wardrobe with anger cuz i can not find a thing to wear.

We go crazy with sales and pay ever more -because we have what people call a false sale - .
Imagine the money spending here and imagine how much we can prevent ourselves from stepping one step close to poverty.

Our love and worship for artificial things goes to life itself.
Building houses , the biggest and most important rooms must be the guests rooms. Sometimes we have three to four rooms for guests only. And they have to be decorated and furnished with the most expensive and beautiful furniture. We need big houses because of this.
Imagine the amount of money we are going to save -or even give to the poor- if we build our houses for US not our GUESTS. An expert said last week that we can built a house this way with about 300,000 Saudi riyal. The cheapest house you can find is 850000 SR, and the bank will take a similar amount of that. So about 1700000 for a house !!!!
and it does not come with furniture :)

We take TOO much care of our kids that they grow up so dependent.
Your sons and daughters will have the best clothes no matter what- i know how parents feel towards their kids but sometimes we spoil them instead of parenting them- .

At school the students will have the best shoes and bags -i can see it at my school with girls i know how poor their parents are-.
There is no lessons about the importance of money and how hard it's to get it. There is a daily lecture from me to my students about the fallen- because they are still work but fall of the desk and they didn't pick them up- pencils and pens and that are new but they didn't get it back, the fountain pens that are not locked which may let it dry even quicker, about the half full bottles of water they bought and won't take home with them because their friends will laugh at them if they did, the half eaten sandwiches, they hate me because of my daily reminder. But i know how poor most of them and they need to realize the importance of small things.

There is a tendency that we don't want our kids to feel lesser than their peers. It's not because we feel sorry for them but we don't want people to know we are poor. Poverty is a shame.

If our kids didn't happen to be smart enough at school- and ALL our kids must be number one- or didn't get good grades. Then they- our kids- decided to attend a private school -for better grades not better schooling and that's another topic- and my parents shall pay, no matter what.

Or else-else could be crying, stop eating, locking our selves, have no respect to our parents, decided not to go to school- and best of all if the parents didn't apply then they will simply fail themselves by not participating in classes or at exams. Then the poor parents will have to borrow money and enroll them in a private school, according to the parents they want their kids to have a future,. And the funny and sad thing is that these students will have the same grades or even worse at the private schools and then have to be back to public schools.

One of my colleagues is a widow, her husbands's salary is very little and yet she decided to build a house for her family. She has 5 kids. None of them is doing OK at school and with all her problems and how she is trying to have a house for her kids, her biggest daughter who left school to go to a private one and the poor mother have to pay insisted on having an engagement party few months ago- which failed by the way- and now the one who is studying at our school insisting that she will go to a private school next year and that her mother will pay !!! .
When her mother talked to me about it, i told her to explain that they can not afford it but she seems helpless . It's the way we raise our kids.

Let's forget about girls. The biggest problems is with our sons. Because he or they-if they are are more than one boys and oh how much we love boys- have to have a car - the brand will go with how much money you have-, and they have to have cell phones.

Why they are the biggest problem ? because men have way better chances of having any jobs, even the worse or the less paid. But no way we are going to let them go and find themselves a job and help with the family. Most will say that they don't want them to be distracted from their school, but hell if they are doing any good at school, .

Plus it's a shame if you would ask your sons and daughters to pay for electricity or water or grocery.
Our kids will live with us after finishing high school being unemployed and still require his/her parents to give them money. And if he is 25 and still no work, it's OK if we find him a wife because he is in the right age, we will pay for the marriage and it's a disaster. Then it's OK to pay for his life, kids and wife.

Remember that big house we HAVE to build a few paragraphs up !!! .
Now , how many sons do you have ? according to their number, you have to build flats for them. Because come on, we can not leave them with out a future or a place to live when they are unemployed and married or employed and married. why pay when Daddy and Mommy can save us the trouble !!!

Hello, all the above are not away from the topic -poverty-.
All of the above is why we are poor.

Tell me what do you think of this lady and her family.
There is a nice lady whose daughter studies at school- you can not see the girl without the finest makeup and the best hair , plus the good shoe and bag, I even saw her with a cell phone once- , The girl has very low grades, and she won't even try the least to do any good. I saw her mother once and twice at school and i thought she was coming to check on her daughter.

Little did i know !!! .
The mother has started to sell some food at the school. She would make some food and sell it to teachers- i knew then from other sources that she used to come to school because someone used to give her money and they advice her to cook and sell instead of asking for money-.

I had a beautiful conversation with her last time, she told me that she have five kids-two girls and three boys-. The eldest girl who i met before not knowing that this is her mother have finished school but was not lucky in finding a job or going to college.
She took some computer lessons to find a work but it was not any help-the mother had to borrow the money they paid to the instructor-.
The three boys-or men actually- all finished their school. And what are they doing now ??
Sleeping at home. Because ?
They don't want to work as security guards !!! .
Well, what do you expect when you have no degree !!!. Those with the highest degrees can not find proper jobs !!!
And of course they ask for money and their phone is dead for about two months and they wanted it back.
I asked here why didn't she work at the women centers to sell her food there so she would have a steady job and here comes the other shock !!
Her husband -who works as a guard and receives only 3000 SR for 7 people- refused and said that it's a shame !!!
and yes a working woman or a woman who help her husband can be a problem for some people.

She is so sweet and every time she came to school hoping for some money .
here is the problem, no body buys a thing -only a two or three buy with about 10 maximum-.

So every time i collect the rest and buy them from her. She knows that i am trying to help her and every time she told me that she can not let me do that every time, that's it's not fair.
I keep assuring her that it's OK and that i want to do so. She leaves determining not to come back, but the she keeps coming back and if she didn't find me, she will look for me everywhere to ask me if i want to buy anything.
It's obvious how much she needs the money-it's not a lot , something like 150 or less SR-. Last week, she called me to ask if she can come to school -because of the exams-. She knows no one buy a thing but she keeps coming, those few riyals means a lot to her and can help with something.
What's frustrate me is that everyone -except a very few -keep ignoring her.
I told them last time that they don't have to take that food with them, they can give it to those who don't have food. And this way we help more than one , but people don't listen!!!.

That's what i do mostly, i divide the food into portions and give it to the workers around the school and sometimes gives the sweets to my friends to give them to their children.
I hope that they do listen soon. I am not saying i am the best and they are the worst but i don't know why people stop helping !!!!

And that's why poverty is spreading hugely.
People stopped helping . everyone thinks i don't have ENOUGH money so i won't give.
And then we call ourselves great Muslims. Did not the prophet say that a Muslims won't be a good one if his neighbor slept without food !!! .

But we do have ENOUGH food, we do when we take our kids to the park and spent a 100 SR the least, so 10 riyal won't cost us a thing.
People will leave a supermarket with carts full and pass by a poor without giving a thing and those who give will put few riyals in their hands and "we don't have enough money for our families".
I saw these things. i watch my society.
I was leaving a big bookshop once when i saw an old man was standing in front of the door asking for money and people keep passing him by with their bags full of expensive stuff and books.

We have a strange notion of not helping. We claim that these people are not REALLY poor and that they are pretending, really ??? .
OK, let's believe you , so what 's the problem if you give this poor liar beggar some money??.
how do you know that he is a lying ?
because we READ it in the newspaper and the advices that we shouldn't encourage beggars, they are showing a really uncivilized face to our country.
Now that's the only thing uncivilized about our country ??
It's just an excuse not to help.

But remember , some of them were in good position before and one day you might be in their shoes ...

Oh and yes if that poor person happens to be a non-Saudi. Then, whey the hell they don't leave our country and go find help in their countries. !!!!
Did anyone think that's that what brought them here in the first place, their countries are poor and this country SUPPOSED to be rich.

And don't let me talk about the role of the government and their institution and organization and what did they do to help the poor.

It's scary and the number of poor people are rising. And rarely do we help.

Remember last time when i said i wanted to collect some money for the poor. Actually it happened that i can not do that because the government has very strict rules into collecting money thanks to Al Qaeda and 9/11 .
What a way to help Muslims, jerks !!!.

And we keep calling ourselves Muslims. The irony is that the "infidel west " pays to the poor world way much more than the Poor Arabic and Islamic world does.

On final note, two days ago the Saudi newspapers have announced that the number of rich Saudi have increased 14 %. Mabrook, now help your poor fellow citizen.

The article explained that to be included in this list you have to have a MILLION, just one. The Total number of rich Saudis now is 104,000.

I won't judge the 14% yet, poor they. They just got their first million, let them enjoy it and then we can talk about them.

But what about the old ones,
what have they done to their societies and the poor ?? .
don't tell me they do it secretly. It's OK in Islam to show what you give if your intent is clear.
So what have they done?
Why are the number of poor increasing? .
Except a few names -like Abdalltef Jamel- we rarely hear about them.

Now that's the real shame .

World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day

( while watching the pictures and reading the information , please just for minutes put yourself in the refugees' shoes. Think of yourself as a refugee for seconds. That may be a small tribute we pay to the refugee and we may understand their troubles-the least we can call it - )

This special day is held every year on the 20th of June.

Why the 20th of June ?
As an expression of solidarity with Africa, which hosts the most refugees, and which traditionally has shown them great generosity, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 55/76 on 4 December 2000. In this resolution, the General Assembly noted that 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, and that the Organization of African Unity (OAU) had agreed to have International Refugee Day coincide with Africa Refugee Day on 20 June. The Assembly therefore decided that, from 2001, 20 June would be celebrated as World Refugee Day.
[Note: The OAU was replaced by the African Union on 9 July 2002.]

The 20th of June, 2010
The theme for this year is " Home" .
in recognition of the plight of more than 40 million uprooted people around the world. Around 10 million of them are refugees of special concern to UNHCR.

Who is the refugee ?
a refugee is a person who "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country".

where is the largest number of refugee ?
As of December 31, 2005, the largest source countries of refugees are Afghanistan, Iraq, Myanmar, Sudan, and the Palestinian Territories. The country with the largest number of IDPs ( Internally displaced persons are people forced to flee their homes but who, unlike refugees, remain within their country's borders) is Sudan, with over 5 million. As of 2006, with 800,000 refugees and IDPs, Azerbaijan had the highest per capita IDP population in the world.

Common refugee medical problems

Apart from physical wounds or starvation, a large percentage of refugees develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression. These long-term mental problems can severely impede the functionality of the person in everyday situations; it makes matters even worse for displaced persons who are confronted with a new environment and challenging situations. They are also at high risk for suicide.

Among other symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder involves anxiety, over-alertness, sleeplessness, chronic fatigue syndrome, motor difficulties, failing short term memory, amnesia, nightmares and sleep-paralysis. Flashbacks are characteristic to the disorder: The patient experiences the traumatic event, or pieces of it, again and again. Depression is also characteristic for PTSD-patients and may also occur without accompanying PTSD.

PTSD was diagnosed in 34.1% of Palestinian children, most of whom were refugees, males, and working. The participants were 1,000 children aged 12 to 16 years from governmental, private, and United Nations Relief Work Agency UNRWA schools in East Jerusalem and various governorates in the West Bank.

Another study showed that 28.3% of Bosnian refugee women had symptoms of PTSD three or four years after their arrival in Sweden. These women also had significantly higher risks of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress than Swedish-born women. For depression the odds ratio was 9.50 among Bosnian women.
A study by the Department of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine demonstrated that twenty percent of Sudanese refugee minors living in the United States had a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. They were also more likely to have worse scores on all the Child Health Questionnaire subscales.

Many more studies illustrate the problem. One meta-study was conducted by the psychiatry department of Oxford University at Warneford Hospital in the United Kingdom. Twenty surveys were analyzed, providing results for 6,743 adult refugees from seven countries. In the larger studies, 9% were diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and 5% with major depression, with evidence of much psychiatric co-morbidity. Five surveys of 260 refugee children from three countries yielded a prevalence of 11% for post-traumatic stress disorder. According to this study, refugees resettled in Western countries could be about ten times more likely to have PTSD than age-matched general populations in those countries. Worldwide, tens of thousands of refugees and former refugees resettled in Western countries probably have post-traumatic stress disorder.

Exploitation

Refugee populations consist of people who are terrified and are away from familiar surroundings. There can be instances of exploitation at the hands of enforcement officials, citizens of the host country, and even United Nations peacekeepers. Instances of human rights violations, child labor, mental and physical trauma/torture, violence-related trauma, and sexual exploitation, especially of children, are not entirely unknown. In many refugee camps in three war-torn West African countries, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia, young girls were found to be exchanging sex for money, a handful of fruit, or even a bar of soap. Most of these girls were between 13 and 18 years of age. In most cases, if the girls had been forced to stay, they would had been forced into marriage. They became become pregnant on average around the age of 15.This happened as recently as in 2001. Parents tended to turn a blind eye because sexual exploitation had become a ‘‘mechanism of survival’’ in these camps.

i have a big mouth and can say something about everything, but this time i am speechless.
i seriously don't know what it's like to be a refugee. To be uprooted from your home and country. All i know is that i hate being kicked out of my home. I hate feeling afraid -from anyone or someone-. I hate not be able to eat when i am hungry. I hate not be able to drink water, let alone dirty one. I hate cold and heat. I hate dirty clothes. I hate not having a place of my own. And i am sure that millions of these refugee feel the same but they have no choice but to take what's being giving to them, to accept that sometimes they can be sick of the heat and the cold and in both ways they can not get cool or shelter from the cold. They can not complain about using one bathrooms for hundreds of people. They can not complain seeing their futures and their kids' futures slipping in front of their eyes and can not do a thing about it. They may or mostly may not get the appropriate medical treatment they need.

Save our Mahd

"Save our Mahd " is a campaign designed by people from that province "Mahd AlZahab" or " The Origin of Gold " .
So what is the campaign about and why?

But First let's start with some information about " Mahd AlZahab" .

Mahd AlZahab or "Al-Mahd" as it's often called is one of the biggest provinces of the area of Medina . It's about 170 km away from Medina 's southern eastern part .

It's has an area of 25.2 thousand kilometer. And around 80 thousand people live there, most of them work in commerce, agriculture, livestock and governmental jobs.

Al-Mahd has grown hugely in the last couple of years and it's population is increasing.

The black dot is where Mahd AlZahab is located.

The area is famous for its Mine of Gold . It's a very old mine. And was reopened in its current state at the time of King Fahd. The first lantern to be lit in the whole Arabian Peninsula was lit in that mine.

The province had started as gathering for people who work in the Mine of Gold . They used to be paid daily and it was mostly some food like sugar and tea plus some money. That was an attraction to many workers because the area lacks all ways of living -back then-, there were no springs or wells.
That gatherings used to be called "the old Mahd" before they move to the eastern part of the mine where land was giving and life started then.

Isotopes for mining wastes in Al-Mahd had proved that it goes way back to 961 BC.
Mining -for Gold- there had started long time ago. The Ottoman's experts believed that the area is full of gold but ignored it because it was an impossible task due to the lack of water in that area.

Well since the area is that big and that good, what's the problem ?
The problem that made lots people from Mahd AlZahab complain and raise their voices is :-
"The pollution of the area".
Mahd AlZahab is one of the MOST polluted area in the whole Saudi Arabia with"Heavy metals" . Numerous studies that have been conducted by different institutions like The Memorial University in Canada and King Saud University in Saudi Arabia shows that the area is polluted with heavy metals like Cadmium, copper,Lead,Zinc and mercury.
It's a huge risk of the health of the people of the area.
The problem is that it has been proved that the cause of pollution is that the company running thet mine of gold- Saudi Arabian Mining Company or Ma'aden معادن- didn't commit to the "Environmental standards" Set forth in the Saudi environment system.
And that's what the whole campaign is about.
Here you can see a satellite picture of the mine.
The campaign website

.seems like a beautiful place.
with 10,000 ounce of gold a year, how much of that goes to the benefits of the people of Mahd AlZahab their welfare and health ??
Funny how people waste their health on something you get the minimum of while others getting to be millionaires.
Hope that their campaign will be a successful one . They deserve a better environment and health.

Brain Strokes

What is a brain stroke ?
How does it happen ?
And why ?

Here are some information i collected for you from different source .

Stroke is a disease that affects the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain.
What causes a stroke?

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that brings oxygen and nutrients to the brain either bursts (hemorrhagic stroke) or is clogged by a blood clot or some other mass (ischemic stroke). When a rupture or blockage occurs, parts of the brain don't get the blood and oxygen they need. Without oxygen, nerve cells in the affected area of the brain can't work properly, and die within minutes (usually 3 to 4 minutes). And when nerve cells can't work, the part of the body they control can't work either. The devastating effects of a severe stroke are often permanent because dead brain cells aren't replaced.

Types of Stroke?
There are two main types of stroke. One (ischemic stroke) is caused by blockage of a blood vessel; the other (hemorrhagic stroke) is caused by bleeding.
Bleeding strokes have a much higher death rate than strokes caused by clots.

What is ischemic stroke?
Ischemic stroke is the most common type. It accounts for about 87 percent of all strokes. It occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms and blocks blood flow in an artery bringing blood to part of the brain. Blood clots usually form in arteries damaged by fatty buildups, called atherosclerosis.
When the blood clot forms within an artery of the brain, it's called a thrombotic stroke. These often occur at night or first thing in the morning. Another distinguishing feature is that very often they're preceded by a transient ischemic attack. This is also called a TIA or "warning stroke." TIAs have the same symptoms of stroke but only last a few minutes; stroke symptoms last much longer and are often permanent. If someones experiences a TIA, they should urgent medical care immediately.
What is a cerebral embolism?
A wandering clot (an embolus) or some other particle that forms away from the brain, usually in the heart, may also cause an ischemic stroke. This is called cerebral embolism. The clot is carried by the bloodstream until it lodges in an artery leading to or in the brain, blocking the flow of blood.
The most common cause of these emboli is blood clots that form during atrial fibrillation (AF). AF is a disorder found in about 2.2 million Americans. It's responsible for 15–20 percent of all strokes. In AF, the heart's two small upper chambers (the atria) quiver like a bowl of jello instead of beating strongly and effectively. Some blood isn't pumped completely out of them when the heart beats, so it pools and clots can form. When a blood clot enters the circulation and lodges in a narrowed artery of the brain, a stroke occurs. This is called a cardioembolic stroke, or a stroke that occurs because of a heart problem.
What is hemorrhagic stroke?
There are two types of cerebral hemorrhages, subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracerebral hemorrhage. A subarachnoid hemorrhage occurs when a blood vessel on the brain's surface ruptures and bleeds into the space between the brain and the skull (but not into the brain itself).
A cerebral hemorrhage occurs when a diseased artery (usually a very small one) in the brain bursts, flooding the surrounding tissue with blood.
Hemorrhage (or bleeding) from an artery in the brain can be caused by the bursting of a small blood vessel or a ruptured aneurysm. Aneurysms are blood-filled pouches that balloon out from weak spots in the artery wall. They're often caused or made worse by high blood pressure. Aneurysms aren't always dangerous, but if one bursts in the brain, they cause a hemorrhagic stroke.
When an intracerebral hemorrhage occurs, the loss of a constant blood supply means some brain cells no longer can work. Accumulated blood from the burst artery also may put pressure on surrounding brain tissue and interfere with how the brain works. Severe or mild symptoms can result, depending on the amount of pressure.
The amount of bleeding determines the severity of intracerebral hemorrhages. In many cases, people with intracerebral hemorrhages die of increased pressure on their brains. But those who live tend to recover much more than people who've had strokes caused by a clot. That's because when a blood vessel is blocked, part of the brain dies — and the brain doesn't regenerate itself; in other words, brain cells can't be replaced. But when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, pressure from the blood compresses part of the brain. If the person survives, gradually the pressure goes away. Then the brain may regain some of its former function.

What are stroke symptoms?

When brain cells are deprived of oxygen, they cease to perform their usual tasks. The symptoms that follow a stroke depend on the area of the brain that has been affected and the amount of brain tissue damage.
Small strokes may not cause any symptoms, but can still damage brain tissue. These strokes that do not cause symptoms are referred to as silent strokes. According to The U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), these are the five major signs of stroke:
  1. Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body. The loss of voluntary movement and/or sensation may be complete or partial. There may also be an associated tingling sensation in the affected area.
  2. Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding. Sometimes weakness in the muscles of the face can cause drooling.
  3. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  4. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  5. Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

10 Risk Factors for Stroke

Ten simple and modifiable risk factors for stroke, including high blood pressure and smoking, comprise 90% of a person's risk, a study shows.
The findings from the INTERSTROKE study are published in The Lancet.
High blood pressure was the leading risk factor for all types of stroke, the study shows.
"Our findings suggest that ten simple risk factors are associated with the 90% of the risk of ischemic and intracerebreal hemorrhagic stroke worldwide," the study researchers conclude."Targeted interventions that reduce blood pressure and smoking, and promote physical activityand a healthy heart, could substantially reduce the global burden of stroke."
There are two main types of stroke: an ischemic stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked; a hemorrhagic or bleeding stroke occurs when a diseased artery within the brain bursts, allowing blood to leak into the brain.
The new study compared risk factors among 3,000 people who had a stroke to those of 3,000 age- and sex-matched individuals who did not have a stroke. Study participants came from 22 countries.
The 10 risk factors that account for 90% of stroke risk are:
  • History of high blood pressure
  • Current Smoking
  • Abdominal obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Poor diet
  • More than 30 drinks per month or binge drinking
  • Ratio of blood fats known as apolipoprotein B (apo B) to apolipoprotein AI (apo AI)
  • Heart disease
  • Psychosocial stress/depression
While all of these risk factors were associated with an increased risk for ischemic stroke, just high blood pressure, smoking, abdominal obesity and diet increased the risk of hemorrhagic stroke, the study shows. Nine of these risk factors were also associated with heart attack in a related study on heart risks.
In an accompanying editorial, Jack V Tu, MD, PhD, of the Sunnybrook Schulich Heart Centre at the University of Toronto, writes that these important findings should help to inform stroke prevention strategies around the world and to reduce the global burden of stroke."

Do You Know Your Stroke Risk?

Some of the most important risk factors for stroke can be determined during a physical exam at your doctor's office. If you are over 55 years old, the worksheet below can help you estimate your risk of stroke and show the benefit of risk-factor control.
The worksheet was developed from NINDS-supported work in the well-known Framingham Study. Working with your doctor, you can develop a strategy to lower your risk to average or even below average for your age.

Many risk factors for stroke can be managed, some very successfully. Although risk is never zero at any age, by starting early and controlling your risk factors you can lower your risk of death or disability from stroke. With good control, the risk of stroke in most age groups can be kept below that for accidental injury or death.
Americans have shown that stroke is preventable and treatable. In recent years, a better understanding of the causes of stroke has helped Americans make lifestyle changes that have cut the stroke death rate nearly in half.
Scientists at the NINDS predict that, with continued attention to reducing the risks of stroke and by using currently available therapies and developing new ones, Americans should be able to prevent 80 percent of all strokes.

My Father Now !!!

So my father has been in the hospital for two weeks and a half.
He was admitted to the hospital because he couldn't breath due to smoking. They put him in a coma. And he depended completely on the machine.
The doctors said that it is a matter of days-3 to 4 days - before he can breath by himself . Days passed by and he didn't wake up or breath by himself. The only progress was that they reduce the level of oxygen from the machine a bit each day, but they never removed it.

Last week, my brother- who is accompanying my father- notice a change in my father condition, he felt that something was wrong with my father. The doctors- like most doctors in Saudi Arabia-insisted that nothing is wrong . But after more pressure they agree to have a CT Scan.

Indeed there was something wrong with my father. He got a brain stroke.
And nobody knew about it !!!!

To cover up their stupidity, they say that he got it while in coma and so they couldn't have known about it. But to think about it now and how he was before going to the hospital , he might got it while there from the beginning.
They say it was a mild one, then a medium one. Next it was on one side of the brain.
And we are still listening to their stories. They plug the machine out and they stopped the drugs but nothing has happened , he didn't wake up and he still can not breathe by himself.
They say it's cuz he is unconscious. and we are still waiting.

Is this it for him ?
is he ever going to wake up ?
is he ever going to talk to us ?
or even hear us ?

The situation is very depressing , shocking and sad. We are depressed and sick and sad.
My brother is devastated. I don't know what will happen to him if something happen to my father??.He is still can not accept the situation that my father might not wake up again or even be aware.
Even my mother -who has endured hell on my father's hand and who has seen him in a lot of bad situation before- is so sad and cries a lot of time. She told u sthat what she sees right now is something she never saw and she feels real sorry for him.
We asked her to forgive him for everything he did and she said that she did ,the moment she saw him that way.

We keep visiting him and talk to him but he can not listen or even respond.
All we see is an old man who is lying on bed plugged to machines with open eyes that never closed until he is asleep. Even his sleeping is trouble because of his breathing problem.

The Island of the Dolls !!

The Island of the dolls is an island located in Mexico. It was a place where a hermit by the name Don Julian Santana lived for the last 50 years of his life. He was married by then decided to abandon his family and lived all alone there.

The place is called The Island of the Dolls because of the dolls Don Julian planted almost everywhere and they are the creepiest dolls . Don did this because he said he was haunted by the spirit of a young girl who drowned in one of the canals surrounding the island.

Rumors say that he used to fish these dolls from the water because he thought they were real children. But actually he was collecting as a shrine around his place for the spirit of the dead girl who tormented him. He even traded fruit and vegetables for old dolls.

This island is now one of the world’s weirdest tourist attractions.
Don Julian Santana was found dead in 2001 in the same canal he said the little girl was drowned in !!!

a creepy place but i would love to visit it one day.
what about you , do you like going to such scary places ? ?
