Nationality

Let me begin by a saying i love and believe in
"Nationalism is a disease" .
And despite believing in this , I still believe in the right for all to have a nationality and a place he/she can call home.

I remember when picking this book thinking it seems about a Saudi guy writing about non-Saudis but i was in for a surprise. The author was actually non-Saudis who has lived almost all his young life in here.
I loved how he gave a prospective to those Saudis without nationalities as i like to call them. People who have been born and raised here but don't have the Saudi nationality cuz their father is not a Saudi.

The book is called " The nationality" or الجنسية in Arabic.

 The author is Mutaz Quttainah

It is not a novel nor an autobiography. It's a mix of both probably. It's not perfect but if you look outside your nationality and all these nonsense as i think of then you would understand it.

Saudi Arabia is a big country with a small population and it's rich too which attracts lots of people from different places with different abilities. Unfortunately, it's one of the countries like most Arab countries that wont grant you its nationality even if you are born on its land or stayed for a long time.

I wrote about the real Saudis without nationality in here before.

The problem is that there are no good reasons for such laws, some have been here for over 40 years and still didn't get the nationality.

I can understand the frustration of someone who has been wanting to be recognized as from this country but I can not even dream of understanding what's it like for someone who has born here and can not be considered a Saudi cuz he/she doesn't have the nationality.

I quote some of Mutaz's words from the book

" لقد كنت دائما مزيجا بين اثنين, دون ان افكر بالامر على محمل الورطة , فالاجنبي الذي يعيش فلسطينيا في السعودية هو ذاته الذي يقضي
صيفه السنوي سعوديا في شوارع القدس "

" I was always a mixture of the two without considering it a dilemma, for the non-Saudi who is Palestinian in Saudi Arabia is the Saudi spending his yearly summer in the streets of Jerusalem"

***

"عالم مجهول بيوت الوافدين العرب ! لايعرفه احد و لا تسلط عليه
العدسات "

"The houses of the Arab workers is a mysterious world, no one knows what's in it and no one cares"

***

" we invaded the public library near my primary school to borrow children's book and we waited our fathers below the almond tree to take us home at the end of the day. Our personalities were forming together with our similar characteristics before going back to our families which create another personality with another accent and another face than the one we carry at school"

***
"نادرا ماكنا نرى في المدرسه طفلا اجنبيا غير متفوق, لقد كانوا يعلموننا اننا اتينا هنا و نحن غرباء و علينا لكي لانفضح انفسنا الا نشمت بنا احدا "

" Rarely have we seen a non-Saudi who is not hard working and smart. Our families taught us that we are strangers and we shouldn't let people gloating on us"

***

"لم يدركوا ان حقيقة اخرى اخذت في النمو بعيدا عنهم, ان هويتي الفلسطينية التى غرسوها هذه السنوات لم تعد تشكل العصب الوحيد في تكويني فثمة ملامح سعودية في لساني و اخرى مصرية و جزائرية و يمنية "

" They have not realize the other reality that has started to grow away from them. that the Palestinian identity they have install in me is not the only things running inside of me as there are other Saudi,Egyptian,Algerian and Yemeni features in me"

***

" كيف يفكر هؤلاء الاباء , يغرسون ابنائهم في تربه يختارونها و يعتقدون ان بامكانهم في اي وقت ان يطلبوا تحويل الحصاد الى تربة اخرى"

"How do parents think when they grow their children in another place thinking they can and at any time ask them to switch their life to another place ?"

***
"لماذا نحن اجانب ؟ و كيف تشعر حين تكون اجنبيا "

"Why are we foreigners? And how does it feel to be one? "

***

"ان حياتنا المشتركة مع اخواننا السعوديين شكلت في دواخلنا عقدة نقص اسمها الجنسية .......وكل منا له في هذه الجنسية شأن ...."

" Our live with our Saudi counterparts grow a complex inside of us called the nationality and each wants it for his own reason"

***
" رغم ان حياتي في السعودية لم تكون اقل ايلاما ,فحين تسمي انظمة الارض و قوانينها ابنها اجنبيا يمضي حياته و هو يشعر انه البطة السوداء القبيحة "

" Despite having a tough life in Saudi Arabia but when the land and its law calls its son a foreigner, he spends his life thinking he is the ugly black duck"

***
"لماذ يعتقد ابناء القبائل  ان الهوية السعودية تخصهم وحدهم وان الجنسية السعودية التى يحملونها لاتكافىءالجنسية التي يحملها القادمون من اقاصي اسيا و الشام و اقاصي افريقيا "

"Why do the Saudi from a tribal origin thinks that the Saudi identity is something belong to them only and that the Saudis from the far Asia , Africa or from Syrian or Lebanese origins are not equal to them "

***

I hope that these words have got you a glimpse into what's the book is all about. And probably into the mind of Saudis without nationality.
And i hope without high expectation that the day people like Mutaz and many who known no land but this to be equal to me in having the nationality.

  2. What great quotes you have selected Wafa'. The book looks really interesting, I would love to read it sometime.
My opinion in this dilemma is that those feelings that the author had described are the same for any person how live abroad. My children and I felt it when we moved and still live in the US. My husband feels it every-time he has problems renewing his temporary Jordanian passport.

These two quotes summarize a lot of what I have been through with my children.

    Excellent post, as always :)

  5. Such an interesting post! I'm glad there is a book out there that talks about such things! I too am a strong believer in the unimportance to "nationality" especially in our modern times where it's so easily to have a mixed culture and lifestyle. Why should someone live on a land for so long, dedicate their lives to providing a service or pouring their efforts and sweat onto a country and in the end be denied the acceptance that they deserve?

I could go on and on about this topic for a long time, and it's very sad and upsetting knowing that most of the general public is either ignorant or too proud to acknowledge these situations.

We are all citizens of Earth. That's what our nationality should be.

    again, great post!

  8. Dr.N,

I guess most of those living outside their homes feel that way, but the problem is for those growing up there especially children who knows no home but that place. What would happen of them if they didn't get the nationality !!!

Thanks a lot my dear for your feed back :)

  14. Loved the review! The Chinese and the Indians in Malaysia can share some of those feelings I think. They are born there and have contributed to their country's growth in so many ways but are regarded less than Malays when it comes to special privileges. It's like being treated second class in your own country.I'm sure there are other countries with similar situations because being classified as the dominant/better race has been with humans since the dawn of time.

But things can and are changing.
    there's always hope.

  15. Lat,

i remembered reading about the problems Chinese face in Malaysia and it's so sad. And indeed lots of countries are faced with such problems which really needs to be considered as highly important and dangerous, nothing makes someone hopeless like not "belong".

  16. well wafa s u know H isnt saudi, he is yemeni but born in saudi. when i asked him why didnt he enroll himself at the Gov uni? he said he couldnt bcoz he isnt saudi. n if he wanna work, he cant work an gov company.n if in not mistaken they limit the age to 25 for student visa. n how if he couldnt find job in saudi( IF ) doesnt it means he needs to get out from saudi n live in yemen which he never live or even visit b4. n i heard that non saudi hve lower salary comparing saudi. it seems to be bias and unfair for me. how if the non saudi has better qualification than the saudi does it means he deserve to get lower salary ?. if im wrong tell me. im not a saudi expert but this info is not from H only but others to(non saudi). n also about the malaysia issues. Gov helps malays and the natives more bcoz chinese are well known to be smart, succesful n rich. about indian, sorry i hve no idea eventho iam 1 ( mix ), but my race is malay for my identification card, which means i still have more benefits to compare chinese and indian. n long time ago the leaders (chinese, indian n malay ) already agreed about malays and natives get more advantages s long they have the nationality n people dont treat them outsiders.

  17. Farsilla,

    H. situation is the worst. you sums it all when you say " if he needs to get out from Saudi and live in Yemen which he never lived or even visited before", that's the sad situation with most of the Saudis without the nationality. It's so sad.

Now i have to disagree with you about the Malay situation when you said that the government helps the Malay more than the Chinese because the Chinese are known to be smart!!! because to me any country should treat everyone equally whether they are rich or poor and just because they are smarter or richer doesn't mean they should be considered a second class. But agreeing to give people more advantages just because they have the nationality is the problem here, what about those who were born in Malaysia and don't have the nationality.
I am sure that H.'s situation is similar to those Indian and Chinese in Malay but in different country.

  18. if im not mistaken those who r born in malaysia, they can apply 2 b 1 eventho the parents arent. n we never treat them 2nd class to b honest. from my experience, chinese in My state they r the most successful people, the r very smart n rich. to compare malays, most of them are from middle class family :) n also chinese n indian do hve the malaysia nationality. n those who r born in malaysia, they can go to gov schools n apply job anywhere they want :)

  20. My uncle have lived in Saudi since the day he was born, he got married with a Saudi woman and they have 8 kids right now, but he never get his nationality. He is frustrated and everything hard for him since he become older and older. In the end, he just land here in Indonesia visit the big family and change his nationality (we're yemenis live in Indonesia), but he cannot bring his wive as its not a rich country here and the get divorced just because of it. Poor for their children. Really, now i begin to questioning about Saudi is a great country that defend Islam and Arab in every aspect. Do you think prophet Muhammad will do the same, maybe is too far, i said Sahaba or other Tabeen since you always quote from them. Do you think will they make it hard for other muslim or arab gaining nationality for instance? Well maybe ulema in my neighborhood praise you for your qur'an sadakah or mosque built. But for me, it's another racism and capitalism.

  21. Houssam,

i could never imagined your uncle frustration and anger and he has every right to be. Born and raised in a country that don't believe you are its son is one of the saddest thing in the world.
I am glad that he belong somewhere even tho it must be hard for him..

And i agree what we are doing is a huge hypocrisy and it's mostly politics and unfortunately this sad situation in almost all the Arab countries :(
